Buju Banton is free of the shackles and chains that confined him to the walls of his prison cell in Florida.The artiste whose real name is Mark Myrie was on Tuesday released from custody and placed under house arrest with several strict conditions to his bail.
Buju faces charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine, aiding and abetting two others in possessing a firearm during the course of distribution.
Banton has been fitted with a GPS monitor and has to pay for private security that will monitor his movements 24 hrs a day. He will only be able to visit his lawyer and if needs be his doctor.
The Gargamel has had to turn over the keys to his Tamarac condo and also will not have access to the security code for the complex and will only be allowed one visitor per day.
Stephen Marley, the son of reggae icon Bob Marley, posted his south Florida home to secure Buju’s release.
The retrial in the reggae superstar’s high profile drug battle against the United States government has been pushed back until February 2011 instead of a date in December.
The international reggae entertainer had been behind bars in a Florida jail for the past 11 months.
